Body Mass Index (BMI) Fact Sheet

bulletBody mass index (BMI) is an objective means of determining if a person may be at increased health risk due to excessive weight. BMI is determined by dividing body weight in kilograms by height in meters squared (BMI = kg/m²) and is becoming the measurement of choice used by health care professionals and investigators.
bulletBMI does not directly measure percent of body fat, although higher BMIs are usually associated with an increase in body fat, and thus excess weight.
bulletEpidemiological studies indicate that a BMI of 27 or greater (27.8 for men and 27.3 for women) correlates with increased morbidity and mortality.
bulletHealth risks increase as BMI increases. A BMI of 27 or greater indicates that an individual may be at a greater risk for developing weight-related health problems, including high blood pressure, dyslipidemia, type II diabetes, osteoarthritis and certain cancers.
bulletHigher or elevated BMI is an indication of preventable risk that should be checked regularly by consumers and their doctors, just like high blood pressure and cholesterol levels.
bulletPrevalence of excess weight and weight-related diseases increases two fold between ages 20 and 59.
bulletResults from the Nurses' Health Study showed that deaths substantially increased in participants with a BMI above 27; nevertheless a trend toward higher mortality was seen in individuals who were mildly overweight.
bulletThirty-three percent of the adult U.S. population are estimated to be overweight, i.e, BMI > 27 (more than 32 million women and 26 million men).
bulletStudies indicate that a decrease in excess body weight followed by weight maintenance may reduce risk factors associated with obesity; weight loss of as little as 5 percent to 10 percent by individuals can be beneficial.
