Help for Canadian Patients

Hi Robin:

OHIP does cover the procedure but there are a number of hoops you have to jump thru first.

There are quite a few Canadians who have had the procedure, or are awaiting their turn or are seeing their doctor and filling out the paperwork.

The first thing you need to do is to check out the web site - clos.net and read the manual. Then you need to discuss it all with your doctor and see if your doctor will support you. Their support is very important as your doctor fills out the form applying for the funding from OHIP and they authorize all the tests and there are a lot, and they do the follow up stuff.

For OHIP to pay for the procedure you need to be obese AND have co-morbidities such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart or liver problems etc. OR you need to be starting something like that. Also joint problems, arthritis etc will help with your application. Basically the OHIP committee that reviews your application decides on a basis of - what is cheaper in the long run - paying for this operation now or supporting you thru other physical problems in the future (sorry to be so materialistic).

Read the manual and decide if you are eligible. Then talk to your doctor about all of this. Then download the application form for OHIP (type OHIP into google then search for the form for out of country operations, fill out what you can and give to your doctor to fill out (YES) on page 2 to the health problem questions. Sometimes people write cover letters to attach with their doctor's forms. Then you send the documentation to OHIP and wait.
It takes about three weeks for their reply. If they turn you down there is an appeal process and several people have been approved after the appeal process.

You also need to fill out an application for CLOS. You have obviously done the first step which is to join this group.

Good luck,

Ann
