Chronic Nutritional Problems Nutritional problems can be common after the Gastric Bypass, but they can be avoided by use of the proper vitamin and mineral supplements, eating a healthy diet and by careful monitoring by your Doctor.
After gastric bypass vitamin and mineral deficiencies have been reported in from 10% to 60% of patients, depending upon the type of surgery, the time after surgery and the vitamin supplements that patients take. All experts agree that high dose vitamin and mineral supplements are needed after any form of obesity surgery. A high potency multivitamin supplement must be taken daily. We recommend that it be taken at triple the regular dose and we think its safest to do this for the rest of your life, after this type of surgery.
A variety of mineral may be decreased after obesity surgery. Blood tests of Calcium, magnesium and phosphorous allow identification of low levels of these minerals. We also recommend daily use of calcium, and many patients, particularly women, will be helped by taking an iron supplement also.
Protein is the type of molecules that make up our muscles, organs, heart, brain and many other tissues. The Gastric Bypass reduces the capacity of the body to absorb protein. It is important to be sure that the body gets enough protein.
Rarely patients may develop liver disease after obesity surgery. To identify this yearly liver function tests are appropriate.
