Surgery for Obesity

Morbid obesity has been especially refractory to diet; exercise and drug therapy,

but numerous studies have reported good results with surgical treatment. In a recent study by Buchwald et. al. the impact of bariatric surgery on weight loss, operative mortality outcome, and 4 comorbidities were studied.[i]

A total of 136 studies including over 22,000 patients were studied.

The mean percentage of excess weight lost was 61% for all patients.

The 30 day operative mortality was between 0.1% and 1.1%. Diabetes, hyperlipidemia, Hypertension and sleep apnea were improved in a large majority of patients.

They concluded that in contrast to diet, exercise and drug therapy, effective weight loss was achieved in morbidly obese patients after undergoing bariatric surgery.
